Disk Space Fan 4 is a fast disk space analyzer and duplicate file remover software. It helps you to free up disk space by quickly finding and deleting big files. It displays disk space usage with a eye-candy ring chart and dynamic animation. You can navigate the folders easily with the ring chart. Understanding the disk map. The sunburst disk map may look unusual at first, but very soon you’ll get used to it and appreciate all its benefits. Think of the map as if it was a flower. Colored petals are folders, grey ones are files. The wider is a petal, the larger is the object it represents. It is also possible to map network drives from within the software. How much RAM is required for Disk Analyzer Pro? Disk Analyzer Pro requires at least 1 GB of RAM if you have high capacity disk drives. Disk Analyzer Pro uses RAM for faster scanning of hard disk drives and quick disk space reporting. Disk space analyzer Saleen TreeMapFs (formerly FilePro) is a disk space analyzer that enables you to create visual disk maps for local and network drives. The cushion treemaps allow you to quickly visualize the entire content of a selected volume, making it easy to spot large file or folders. Nov 07, 2008 WinDirStat is a disk usage statistics viewer and cleanup tool for Microsoft Windows (all current variants). WinDirStat reads the whole directory tree once and then presents it in three useful.
Sunburst maps (also known as treepies) are a relatively new method of visualizing tree structures that is often positioned as an alternative to treemaps.
The very first mentions of sunburst maps can be tracked down to 90s, when various researches experimented with nested pie charts or radial versions of treemaps.
In a few years software developers have adopted the technique for visualizing disk content. Max Howell’s Filelight and Steffen Gerlach’s Scanner are probably the best known examples of such applications.
While working on DaisyDisk we’ve made a series of tweaks to make sunburst maps more suitable for disk visualization:
- all sectors are sorted by size, so visual comparison of folders within the same level can be done in a blink of an eye
- large files clearly catch the eye
- relatively small files and folders within the same level are consolidated into a special
smaller objects
sector making it easier to estimate the amount of disk space taken by large groups of small files (like image collections) - all children of the same folder have similar colors; such coloring greatly facilitates navigation
- the map is not limited by just 5 levels of depth, outer rings have ralatively small thickness, but allow you to reveal space wasters deep inside the disk structure
- the
blossom
animations are not justeye candy
, but illustrate visual relationships between folders

Note: if you are looking for an alternative for Linux, you are looking for KDirStat (apt-get install kdirstat or apt-get install k4dirstat on Debian-derivatives) or QDirStat and for MacOS X it would be Disk Inventory X or GrandPerspective. Please visit the WinDirStat blog for more up-to-date information about the program. On start up, it reads the whole directory tree once and then presents it in three useful views:
The treemap represents each file as a colored rectangle, the area of which is proportional to the file's size. The rectangles are arranged in such a way, that directories again make up rectangles, which contain all their files and subdirectories. So their area is proportional to the size of the subtrees. The color of a rectangle indicates the type of the file, as shown in the extension list. The cushion shading additionally brings out the directory structure. |
